Excursions in St Petersburg

City tour

The city tour of St.Petersburg includes visiting a lot of places of interest. The Vasilievsky iland with St.Peter&Paul's fortress are used to be the first destination of the excursion. The fortress is the city's oldest building, it was founded by Peter the Great who also planned to transfer the country's capital from Moscow to Petersburg, and became the official necropolis of the reigning dynasty. Nearby there is the Winter Palace, the Emperor's official residence. Besides, the most prominent architectural monuments of the city include the Admiralty, Kazansky and St.Isaak's cathedrals. One of the most beautiful construccions is Smolny - group of buildings on the bank of the Neva River, established to provide the pitch needed for shipbuilding. Then Elizaveta Petrovna who although fond of entertainment and dancing, was also devoutly religious, chose this place for the Resureccion New Maiden Convent (Novodevichy Convent). You will also see the Aurora Cruiser - maned after the Aurora fregate and that became from the 7th of November of 1948 the monument of the October revolution located near Petrodvoretskaya embankment of the Neva River.

Pushkin (Tsarskoye Selo)

The architectural ensemble of Trsarskoye Selo gives a vivid idea of life at Catherine's court at the end of the 18th century. There are many interesting buildings in the gardens and parks of Tsarskoe Selo (could be translated as 'Tsars' country residence) where aristocratic families from St.Petersburg spent time in their country houses.

Pavlovsk
The palace and park in Pavlovsk were the coutry residence of the Emperor Paul I. It is a perfect speciment of Russian classicism of the 18th-19th centuries. The Grand Pavlovsk Palace takes one's breath away by its beautiful shape and exquisite interior decoration. And unforgottable concerts of chamber music by 18th-19th century composers are performed here in summer ivenings.

Hermitage
The boast of the museum includes the colleccion of monuments of aplied arts, the collection of engravings and drawings, and many other objects. There are only few museums in the world which could vie with the Hermitage for the scope and variety of their collections.

House of Peter I
The museum exibits items related to victory of Russia in the Northern War of 1700-21, as well as the items about foundation of St.Petersburg. The interiors show the household items of the 18th century, and objects that belonged to Peter the Great.

Petrodvorets
Petrodvorets was constructed as a country residence of the Emperor Peter the Graet. It was opened in summer time only and the opening turned into great festivities lasting far into the night. The are two palaces in the territory of Petrodvorets - the Monplaisir Palace (built for Peter the Great) and the Grand Palace (built for the Empress Yelizaveta Petrovna, Peter's daughter)
